Amazing Stories

My favorite news story so far this year: Yankee outfielder Hideki Matsui got married a few days ago. At the press conference to announce he was married, instead of bringing a photo, or his new bride, he brought the carnival-quality sketch shown above. On a side note, apparently Matsui is known in Japan as much for his huge porn collection as he is for his bat. And he's known to trade porn regularly with the Japanese reporters that follow him around in the USA. Amazing.

In other Japan-related news, I recently saw the Boredoms live for the first time. I'll you spare the cliches and just say that it was even more amazing than the story above...

Also want to mention my trip to Las Vegas last weekend where I met up with WM, who informed me of the latest ATL classic, "Bitch U Ride that Marta Bus." I suspect it's also amazing.

"that asshole does look like that monkey."

i'm sure many of you have seen the following inane anti-evolution billboard on 316 coming towards athens:

that problem/irony is that it only serves to exentuate the similarities between a man's facial structure and a monkey's. amazingly ineffective.

my last wire post...

...is a link to a letter to the fans by creator david simon (don't worry, no spoilers). i had not yet taken the opportunity to eulogize the show, so thought i might do so briefly.

without discuss plot points, i'll just say that the last episode was fantastic, and brought more closure than i was even expecting. we'll miss you jimmy, bunk, lester, kima, carver, sydnor, daniels, rhonda pearlman, omar, bubbles, marlo, chris, snoop, avon, stringer, slim charles, weebay, bodie, wallace, dookie, michael, randy, namond, prez, cutty, gus, carcetti, frank, nick, the greek, prop joe. hell, you too clay davis, ziggy, herc, rawles, royce, maurice levy, scott templeton, cheese. i can't wait to get the [as-of-yet unavailable] deluxe full series dvd set that is surely awaiting me next christmas. the fact that so many characters are vividly etched in the viewer's mind [list compiled by memory] is a testiment to the endurability of the show and its characters. television has never seen its equal.

ps- PC brought this story to my attention, and i thought it was a quality addendum. if given the chance, i may well act out this modest act of civil disobedience.

fuck hillary clinton, too.

this article that LB sent me summarizes the situation pretty well. no matter who you favored initially, it is clear at this point that hillary's continued campaign is hurting the democrats chances in the fall. the only way she could win the nomination is in a knock-down, drag-out convention, which would severely hurt party. and this is true even if she can get mail in re-votes in michigan and florida and make up some delegate ground. she's fucking the party's chances, giving mccain anti-obama fodder and running a rove style hatchet campaign, and personal ego is the only reason. right now i'm i'm not even sure i would vote if she won the nomination.

Chronicles of Stilltown pt. 3

This is really a story more about Stillwater than any of my friends. Every so often I get nostalgic for the town where I spent all of my formative years. Sometimes I still wish I lived there. T hen I think about this story. I think that even people who live Athens get a little frustrated here and there, but we should all remember how good we have it. So the next time you are angry about frat guys, hippies, hipsters, atlanta immigrants and especially being persecuted by traffic when you ride a bike, think about this nugget:

Like Athens, Stillwater is a college town. OSU students make up approximately 1/3 of the population of 70,000, similar to the ratio here. As such it seems reasonable to expect a relatively similar living experience to the ATH, but such expectations would be woefully misplaced. One warm sunny day, one of my friends was riding his bike down 6th street, which is roughly the equivalent of the atlanta highway/broad street/lexington conglomeration here only not as long because Stillwater is geographically smaller. The road at one point borders campus and the bar scene and at other points it is a main commercial thoroughfare. All of this is important to establish that he was riding his bike down a major street (very flat and perfect for riding) not though a damn cow pasture. As my friend was blissfully pedaling away, less than a mile away from a supposed institution of higher learning, a guy in a pick up truck pulls up next to him and yells:

THIS IS OKLAHOMA! WE DON'T RIDE BIKES YOU PUSSY!

For those of you who might feel that it would not be too unexpected to get such behavior from one of our many fine residents of Milledge Ave, bear in mind that this guy was neither 1. drunk nor 2. doing this for the entertainment of anyone else in the car. Also if this happened here there Pete MccCommons would write an outraged article the following week and the bike rider would probably get some kind of medal for courage.

If you need any furthe proof that Oklahoma sucks check out this shit. I guarantee you it will be a huge hit.
