top 5 shows (make that 10):
in the spirit of il gato's wildly popular and interesting "things i don't like, but should" thread (which sort of got hijacked by a less nuanced "the wire sucks" / "the wire is the best show ever" point/counterpoint; sorry), i thought we should put forward a few lists as points of discussion. i thought i would start with one of the most simple ones i could think of: top 5 current tv shows.
1. lost
2. mad men
3. it's always sunny in philadelphia
4. true blood
5. anthony bourdain
ok, so when i look at my list i realize it's pretty vanilla. i'll take it a step further with another 5.
6. entourage
7. house hunters international
8. flash forward
9. californication
10. curb
still not really any big shockers on there, but then again that's for you to comment (obviously i wouldn't think so). a couple exclusions that i do feel like noting, though:
30 rock - like arrested development, i think it's really funny and very "smart". but i just don't care about watching it.
the office - i really like the office, way more than 30 rock. but i still never make a point of tuning in, and old episodes go unwatched on the dvr. in fact the only true comedy that i tune in for regularly is it's always sunny.

i can watch the office over and over and over and over.
mb inspired joyce and i to watch true blood and now i'm a fan. don't have hbo anymore or i guess i would be watching curb. joyce watches californication and, as i'm often in the room, i watch it as well, off and on.
as far as shows i watch every week:
the office
bourdain
frontline
i watched a 1/2 episode of lost and didn't care about watching another. i suppose some people say the same thing about the wire though.

i'm certain I couldn't come up with ten favorite shows, and maybe not even five, although that may reflect on the quality of the Colonoscopy cable package. In no order
1. Lost--mcsquared, honestly I had a hard time believing this show could live up to the hype, and it probably doesn't, but that says more about the hype than the show. I have been slow to warm to a number of critical tv hits but in most cases, including lost, it's been worth the effort. This is the only tv show that I would ever consider worthy of leisure time reading.
2. House--not to start the authentic debate again, but house is about as real and natural as a bag of funyuns. still, it's awesome because 1. house the character is a homage to sherlock holmes, whom i'm a big fan of and 2. the gradual development and nuance of his tortured soul/witty bastard character has been very enjoyable.
3. The office
4. thirty rock
Man, that's really all I can think of.

"Sunny" is probably the funniest show on TV right now, IMO. Far superior of "The Office," which hovers right around the level of "Friends" as far as laughs.
If your opinion of 30 Rock is based on anything recent, I'd strongly recommend going back to seasons 1 and 2, before it became the Tina-Fey-makes-jokes-about-chocolate-and-dating Show. I watched the episode with Pee Wee Herman on a plane and literally laughed out loud through the whole thing. It's amazing.
I'm working my through the dvds of "Mad Men" and really liking it. But I suspect that has more to do with my (somewhat unhealthy) fixation on Mrs. Draper than anything else.
yeah, i realize that being able to list 10 favorite current shows is a little bit incriminating. i watch plenty of tv. and this top 10 ignores bret michaels vehicles, etc.
shit, i just realized i left off friday night lights. that's top 5 for sure, maybe...no. 4. displacing...curb? or maybe house hunters international. i do end up watching HHI a couple times a week, but i could do without it fine.
Hillary and I watch House Hunters (both domestic and international varieties) all the time! Also, Property Virgins.

the office has declined a bit in the last two seasons though i think a friends comparison is a bit harsh. have never watched always sunny, but will now.

I just started watching The Office while in Greece. I've never watched The Office on Thursday, except for one time when Thrill wanted to watch a season finale at my house. It's a great comedy, to say the least. Entourage is great, though this season dropped off a little bit. True Blood stays the shit. Mad Men is awesome through season 2. I quit watching FNL after my crying jag. I think a no. 4 rating is likely appropriate.
I think i watch tv more consistent with the over 65 demographic.
1. CBS Sunday Morning - it's so much better than going to church.
2. I still watch the news at 6:30 but have to switch up every few weeks because one of the stations does some piece of shit human interest segment. it's the news, dammit!
3. antique road show - laura loves this show, so i'm kinda forced to watch it on a regular basis. it can be really awesome. it can be a little boring at times, too.
4. jeopardy
5. cash cab
as for sitcoms/etc.
1. house - i like predictable shows that i don't have to watch every week. it's still inventive and clever sometimes, too.
2. i still like 30 rock - but the annoying product placement sucks and the show as il gato already said was a lot better during season 1 and 2. there were a couple episodes interspersed throughout those seasons that were just outrageously funny.
i've added mad men and it's sunny to the uverse queue and am looking forward to watching 'em.
Cash cab is weirdly totally enjoyable.
Btw, the first episode of the V remake looks promising. And the Mad Men season finale was top shelf, may push it above Lost in my book.
