in fairness, though i always disliked the music, my degree of youthful loathing for "dave" was social as much as anything. i called the guys i hated in high school the "dave matthews crowd." these were the guys who all drove suvs and wore tobogans (some of which said dmb on them). i played basketball with some of these guys, and i hated them.
my hatred was further solidified one day in college when, during a Z93 "3D Weekend" [dylan, doors, dead], a guy i hated said "maybe in 20 years they'll include 'dave' and call it a '4D Weekend.'"
i would like to go on the record as hating dave matthews as well (big surprise, i'm sure). however, i was most intrigued by the srv reference in the article. people actually like that fucker. why?
i think only black people should play to the blues. the only exception being duane and gregg because they were born white but turned black in their teenage years.
I don't really think you should get down on Stevie like that, kp. I don't think he was a god or anything, but the dude can play and he's not lame. Seeing his live performance on a video from the early eighties may sway your opinion. It's pretty damn awesome. I'm not saying you should get his albums, but he's certainly not in DMB territory...
while i agree that he's nowhere near as shitty as "dave", i was likewise intrigued to see stevie ray vaughn evoked. is he presented as a genuine leap forward, or does he merely represent the next reference point on a continuum of bad musical taste? i'm not sure, but i kind of suspect the later.
Oh, it's probably the latter. However, I do realize that lots of white boys go through their stevie ray phase, he is way cooler than dave will ever be. The guy put cocaine in his coffee in the morning, ya'll. Give him some love. Also, stevie fans are nowhere near as obnoxious, perhaps because he is dead, but still....
mcmtl, i think it's the latter as well. i'll give the writer of the article the benefit of the doubt. saucy, i've seen that video (i think you brought it in for us to watch in guitar class in high school), and it's pure wankery. i know that sounds a little bitchy, but those long drawn out wank fests are not the kind of style of guitar i dig. i call it guitar masturbation. you do that sort of thing in the privacy of your own home.
i don't think i brought that video, it was somebody else's. maybe even Patterson's, or Biff. haha. I'm not saying that I'm a big fan or anything. I'm just saying that he's a lot cooler than dave matthews. At least his clothes were cool, in a weird way.

granted, i didn't know you in high school, but i would have pegged you as a closeted fan.

practice your habit. haha. good ol' mr. patterson.
I never cared enough to hate Dave Matthews. Why would you waste perfectly good cocaine by putting it in coffee?
Apparently, the coke was to wake him up in the morning. coffee just wasn't enough, so he threw some cocaine in there...
