this was first time i've seen oldham (who i mark as one of my top 5 acts for sure). dude is straight up weird genius. his look, facial expressions, and movement were off-kilter in a timeless and inspiring way. as for the sound, big cat and i discussed it at the show, but if you had told me that he would play cuts from his entire catalogue sped up, with a bigger arrangement, and a little jammed out a bit, i may not have been optimistic about the results. but it was mesmerizing. the ladyfriend thought so as well, and in fact decreed it probably her all-time favorite live show. for me, definitely my favorite of the last few years. and this despite him not playing any of my 15 or so favorite jams.
check out this interview with will oldham with songs from all songs considered. it really helped me get a handle on the new record. i love how he says that he drew inspiration from michael jackson's off the wall for the newest record.
by the way mcsquared, i enjoyed the article you sent a couple months back on oldham from the new yorker. his recent media blitz has been cool. i've learned a lot about him.
Having seen him five times, I would rate this as his second best of the five. The Orange Twin show is easily one of the best shows I've ever seen, though the sound quality was better at The Variety Playhouse. This was a solid performance, to say the least.
that orange twin show may have been the best environment for a show ever. it was cheap, great music, great crowd, and outdoors. those four things very rarely come together.
one of my top 5 shows ever, maybe top 2...the orange twin show. i think i hung out with deuce deuce for the show. i like his new lineup as well. mcsquared
