DJ Mahogany Is Going On Hiatus

Hello all my fellow bloggers...

I hope all is well. I'm so sorry to all of you whom I've kinda lost touch with. School and work has been keeping so insanely busy that unfortunately I don't have time to do a lot of stuff. Well, the end of the yellow brick road is near as my last quarter at Athens Tech begins on April 2nd and I'll be grauduating on June 16th (Sauce...you know what I want for a graduation gift :-). So, in order to focus on that endeavor I quit Vision Video and I'm not going to do any DJ Mahogany shows except for 2 fundraisers for great organizations that I've already got planned. So, if you haven't been out to any of my shows in a while...I've got 2 left. I'm doing the post spelling-bee dance party @ the GO Bar on Friday night and then there will be a huge soul blowout dance party at Little Kings on Saturday night. Friday night I'll be going on at 11 p.m. and there will be no cover for the post spelling-bee dance party and Saturday night I'll be going on at 11:15 p.m. and once again there will be no cover. I ask that you spread the word, come out, and dance yo ass off. Thanks to all of you for your support and being great friends. After everything is over, all will fall back into place.

Grindhouse

If you're a fan of Death Race 2000, Switchblade Sisters, The Mighty Peking Man, Zombie, Faster Pussycat Kill, Kill, Dawn of the Dead, El Topo, or you just thought From Dusk till Dawn was the jam, you have probably already made plans for the impending explosion that will be the Tarantino/Rodriguez co-joint Grindhouse. If you haven't, I'm semi-organizing an outing on Saturday the 7th, Starlight Drive-In (ATL) for anyone willing to make the drive from Athens. So far, it's me, my girlfriend, and Will M. Come along if you want. Seeing it under the stars, with old school concession stands and old school concessions should only add to the ambiance.
On another note, I've been watching a lot of Something Weird Video's On Demand channel and recently saw the most amazing trailers for the Preacherman saga. Preacherman is kinda like if Blackbelt Jones, or Marky Mark's character from Boogie Nights just happened to be a travelling preacher in the South as well. It kinda reminded me of that Flannery O'Connor story where the traveling preacher beds the girl with a wooden leg in the barn. Maybe Reno should find some copies for a new Friday night filmfest.

cleaning up the neighborhood.

while i confess that i have always enjoyed observing the various shenanigans that go down in front of big pink, i have to admit this is probably a good thing; then again, who knows if anything is going to change. to clarify, 395 barber is directly across the street from me.

Nashville Nine

1.On the way up, through Alabama, stopping in Cullman for BBQ at Johnny's BBQ and watching the 25 or so stares as we walked in. Johnny's is one of those old time joints that still stocks t-shirts and Big Red in the display case at the front. I had a BBQ sandwich topped with slaw. There was a rebel flag and cannon down the street.
2.That Junior Kimbrough record we listened to as the Tennessee hills arrived on the radar.
3. Accompanying my Grandmother and her boyfriend to their St. Patrick's Day party. Talking to some guy who went to school with the Bear. "He was a mean cuss, I'll say that. Hell of a football coach."
3 1/2. Irish dinner at the party-Corned beef, lamb chops, boiled cabbage and Irish soda bread, a hybrid of poppy seed and rye bread from what I could tell. Irish coffee for dessert.
4. Robert's Western World (Downtown Nashville)-Another "Ya'll ain't from here are ya" on the way in from the doorman, a skinny kid with a ruddy Braves hat from Huntsville, AL. Robert's, I'm guessing, is where a lot of the old school country guys "practiced" for what was probably spare change back then. Long, narrow venue, kinda like the old Engine Room, nicely littered with framed photos of the stars, signed dollar bills, and boots...lot's of boots. PBR in the can if you want. Drunk old people dancing at the front to Muddy Waters, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, etc.
5. Printer's Alley-The old Bourbon Streetesque seedy alley of downtown. Blondie from the Clermont used to strip there.
6. Hatch Show Print-Simple but classic concert posters for everyone from The Carter Family to Korn. I passed on the $10 Korn poster.
7. San Antonio Taco Company-The Taco Stand of Nashville, with a porch facing Vanderbilt. The guacamole tacos were a nice pairing with Pink Floyd's The Wall.
8. My grandmother's magazine collection-Apparently she subscribes to W. The "Art" issue I thumbed through while waiting for the Vanderbilt game to start featured everyone from Richard Prince to Juergen Teller to Stephen Shore to Jeff Koons. Further proof that my grandmother is cooler than yours.
9. Vanderbilt beating Washington State (and watching it happen with my grandmother, who went to Vanderbilt). Second only to watching Duke get beat the day before we left.

The Lives of Others

Went to see "The Lives of Others" this past weekend. Thought it was excellent on every level and very "realistic", but realized I would have no way of knowing if it were not.

Can we get some commentary from 4KS's resident expert on East Germany?

I'm pretty sure I just signed my life away to google

Alright Huevos, your tactics of fear and intimidation have worked and I signed up for this new deal. Google is like the stay puft marshmallow man: it looks friendly and cool, but its sheer size and power means that inevitably it will harm you in some way.

go west, young man.

going to texas tomorrow to hang out with the brownbear for a few days. gonna check out his place of employment outside houston, then head to austin to crash with a friend of his. made plans to do so even before we realized it was the weekend of sxsw. not gonna buy the "badge", which'll cost you an absurd $600 (nor the lesser wristband, which runs $115). but we should be able to slide into a few free shows, including this one, where my biggest dilemna will be which of the pipettes to pathetically try to hit on (just kidding, SM).

actually my time and attention will probably be more occupied this week by the arrival of march madness. awesome. the bowman and jturner hosted their yearly calcutta last night. MB was in the house as a first-time attendee. i nabbed a couple 15-16 seeds angling for the "biggest blowout" payout; then picked a couple mid-level seeds with a shot at a sweet 16 payout (gonzaga, stanford... and the hated dukies). didn't have the cojones to pick up any of the high-end squads. or perhaps it's just that i'm not a gambling degenerate like the bowman. anyhow, really looking forward to it; the first weekend of the tournament is always one of the best times of year. good luck in your pools, kiddos.

Andalusia

Inspired by a recent article in the Times, the lady friend and I took a trip to Milledgeville to see Flannery O'Connor's farm, Andalusia. You aren't allowed to take pictures inside the house, but I snapped a few anyway.

Madonna Dance Party @ Little Kings Friday Night

Hi all of you sexy bloggers...

Reno Melons here to inform you all of a DJ Mahogany event. First and foremost, congrats to Dave C. & his lovely wife on the future addition to their family. I was just telling Mr. Colonoscopy the other day how all the guys I have crushes on are becoming dads now.

Well...I've got a very different dance party coming up on Friday night. I decided to radically change gears and do something very different at the suggestion for a very dear friend of mine. I'm going to do a tribute dance party to Madonna at Little Kings. To make it even more of a fun night, it's going to be a sexxxy ladies of the 80s dance party with the emphasis towards Madonna. I've got lots of great fun songs lined up from all genres. I hope that all of you can come and help me to spread the word. There's no cover as always. Everything will kick off around 11:15 p.m. and go on until Little Kings tells me to shut it down. I hope to see all of you there. Stay sexy bloggers....
